Timing issue(s)


TERCEL1 has been running well but the other day when I tried firing it up to
drive into work.... There was a tremendous lack of power.... Barely able to
make it up the very tiny incline leading out of where I live.

Not wanting to chance it, I turned around, sputtered back to the house
and took the 2001 Corolla to work and would deal with TERCEL1 when I
got back from work...

Upon returning from work, I popped the hood and didn't see anything
glaringly wrong.... Wait! What the...



...which messed up the timing but, how did that happen?

Closest I can figure out is, the set screws (or, whatever they're called
loosened up enough so the adjustable cam gear came out of adjustment
and sputter, sputter, putt-putt...

Now I've gotta set the timing from scratch!!!!

Any way I can do it without removing the valve cover on the 5E engine? :dunno:

PS: By the way, If anyone out there is using one of these adjustable cam
gears, you might want to do an occasional check on the tightness of
those set screws (or, whatever they're called)

That's crazy. I see the obvious missing set screw, but noticing the missing chunk at 8'oclock, crack at 10'oclock (?), and crack at high-noon positions...

My intention is to, jack front end of the car off the ground, remove the
spark plugs, valve cover, adjustable cam gear, and move the crankshaft
to this position:



...assuming the cams (even though the timing adjustment was changed
due to the lose set screws on the adjustable cam gear) are still properly
aligned as they were in the photo below
, taken in Oct of 2014, when I
was putting the 5E engine back together after having replaced one of its
burnt pistons:



I can't remember what I did back in 2014, while putting engine together but, the car started right up....

Would someone please refresh my memory...? (Getting old is a BE-YOTCH!!)

Stock cam gear has a hole marked 5e that you align with a dot in the head (think it’s actually on a cam bearing cover). Timing belt gets installed w/ crank at TDC mark and dot visible thru hole. The 2 cams would not have moved relative to each other with β€˜β€˜tis failure of the cam gear as evidenced by the marks still lining up in your pic.

I don’t think you need to remove valve cover, spark plugs, or jack car up to do this, just remove cam gear cover.

GT, my old friend... hope all's well with you and yours. How's your
daughter doing in school... Last I recall she was just entering high school
or was it freshman in college.... Gettin' old sucks (what was I talking
about? hahaha)

The given advise from Throttler and verified by you, sounds familiar now
that I hear it again.

I think I'll save the $99.00 and go back to the stock cam gear...

In this photo:



... can I assume the 'A' on the bearing cap is the timing mark to which the
'5E' on the timing gear gets aligned?

Can I further assume the cam gear alignment pin gets rotated so as to be
where the 'A' is? Which would also be the slot where the '5E' is stamped
on the timing gear?

Once the cams are set as described above, it would just be a matter of
setting the crank pulley to the zero /TDC mark and put the timing
belt in place...
