engine noise

I bought a 97 parts car, starts instantly and is super clean under the hood with 168 thou showing but unfortunately has a stupid loud knock when running.

These Tercels are really getting hard to come by around here for cheap money, Id like to remove the oil pan and see if I can fix the noise.

( more of a challenge I guess )

Is it possible to do so while the engine is in vehicle, Id rather not do anything more than necessary such as removing the head and I cant imagine this noise being valvetrain.

Ive dropped pans and replaced bearings on other vehicles but not sure what Id be getting into here. Thanks

Yes, you can remove the pan in the car. I'd bet it has a failing oil pump, check the last bearings and see if they have damage. If they do, there's probably damage in the head as well, on my turbo car when the pump died it ruined a rod bearing and smeared the cam mounting areas in the head, I ended up replacing everything.
