Hello everyone, I'm in northern BC and have just picked up a 1988 Tercel with 140K on it for $300 and am on the path of fixing it up. It didn't start when I picked it up as I was told it needed an alternator (had new one in the trunk) and they pulled the battery. So things I have done so far include;

November 2017 - 140K

  1. Alternator
  2. Battery
  3. Air Filter
  4. Fuel Filter
  5. Oil Filter and Oil
  6. Instrument Cluster Bulbs
  7. Spark Plugs
  8. Adjust Throttle Cable
  9. License Bulbs

The plugs I removed were quite white and had ash deposits on them (as seen in photo) any thoughts on improving this? I suspect valve stem seals as it sounds common from what I've read on here and the vehicle does puff some smoke thats slightly blue. Also the vehicle has an oil leak from the passenger side front, from the looks of it I would say engine oil pan gasket, especially in the half moon area where the crankshaft is.

Other than that the car runs quite well and has a cool clock on the dash.

If anyone has any thoughts on what other maintenance should be done or modifications to improve mileage or power I am all ears. From the way things look right now I would say I am gonna get 400km to a tank all city driving.

You hit the nail on the head. Valve stem seals are very notorious on them.

You can try running some Marvel mystery oil and see if that might bandaid it for a while.

Thanks for the info. I'll get me some viton seals and probably just do the headgasket while I'm in there.

I am also having trouble with the climate control illumination. I have replaced the bulb and it still doesn't work, I imagine it's not a fuse issue as it shares power with the instrument cluster. I didn't see any corrosion in the socket, I'll give the wires a wiggle and see if it lights up.
