Is this the TD04L I'm looking for?

So, this is the turbo I've had laying around in the garage for like 9 or 10 years ... I had to dig it up hiding underneath some camping supplies...

I'm hoping it's the correct TD04L to use for upgrading my 4E-FTE ...

FYI, in the 2nd picture that's NOT a crack you see, it's cobweb still hanging on the wastegate door or whatever you call it. I hadn't brushed all of them off yet ...

If one of you more-knowledgeable folks can let me know whether this will work, or if I need to look at sourcing another... :dunno:

FYI, it spins very smoothly and seems to have absolutely no shaft play. Other than needing a wire brush and some VHT Flameproof (I'm too cheap for a proper ceramic, LOL), it looks good to go ...

Thanks all!

Some quick digging on the numbers on the housing suggests that this is the oem TD04 on the 02-04 WRX / 2.0L ... So, are we good to go? :crossfingers:

Pretty sure that's what I have on my car. Works quite well. Seal the internal gate, weld a compatible flange on a stock 5th gen exhaust manifold, add an external wastegate and have a good time.

With the right manifold, electronics and other equipment, you can generate more hp than the stock internals will support.

The general consensus seems to be 220-240hp is OK on stock internals, but it depends on who you ask.

My goal is 225-ish - but I plan on doing a lot of supporting mods to get that, and then in 2018 I plan on doing a forged rebuild to support a little more. I'd like to be reliably running 250+ and this turbo will do that, I understand.

Here's a good little write-up that details a little bit: http://www.ukstarletowners.com/page/articles.html/_/tuning-4efte/st...

Their stage1 write up that precedes that is here: http://www.ukstarletowners.com/page/articles.html/_/tuning-4efte/st...

Thanks, I was wondering at what hp I would need to go to forged internals.
I'm still trying to collect info to come up with my goals. My goal for now is to hopefully pull my paseo 5E this weekend and get it on the engine stand.
Good luck with your project.

The stock internals should hold whatever these turbos can throw. Depending on the exact one (there were different TD04 sizes), max is 250-275hp range. Most are below 250. Key is good management and good fuel so you don't get detonation or run lean, that's what breaks stuff. My turbo car was happy on 20+ psi, it was a clutch, then a head gasket (my fault for using a used head), but it made power like a champ.
