Rear motor mount bracket is different
Switching the 4 speed in in place of a 3 speed got alot of hidden little details
easy way to find out is the door jam it should say AT a132l or AT a242l
the 4 speed at 80mph is 3k btw :lachen:
Imma copy over a post I made on another thread

"You pretty much pulled everything that you needed
What I was missing was that rear motor mount bracket which is essential
But you should be good to go, the overdrive switch is not really needed because it stays in overdrive on or off (whatever keeps the 4 gears instead of 3 on)
You might see your mpg go down due to added weight if city driven but improved mileage on the highway
I had rigged up the bracket on my shifter cable to work, took the 3 speed one and beat it flat, D is 2, N is D, P is P, R is N lol
Also the transmission mount on the right hand side of the car is different for the 3 and 4 speed, one under battery area, tranny is a tight fit, was a :censored: to line up on a jack
a242l means mechanical OD a242e means electronic OD(paseo only)
No need for the Ecu as i got the 3speed one and runs fine

Change tranny filter, my magnets were broken in two for some reason, tranny i picked up had 90k miles too, change fluid, run for about 50-100 miles and change the fluid again and you should be good to go"

Something else I should include is that my speedo cable was not long enough so I got a short extension.

I just had to reread this. So the TERCEL 4spd will work fine in a 3spd car. Basically get the brackets?

I am going nuts trying to find a 3spd at this point. 4spds are everywhere (almost) and cheaper

Dang, too bad your original trans isn't the 4 speed. I'd like to get my hands on a junked one for the differential gearing.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes. The rear motor mount bracket. The drivers side transmission mount. Then the little arm thingy that attaches to the shifter cable at the trans. Also an extension piece for the speedo cable.

Cool thing about the 4 speed is the diff uses the same atf and is all connected. You dont gotta worry about filling the diff like in the 3speed where they are separate.

I had to buy the rear bracket at the dealer. I got the mount at my work as well as the speedo extension. If you want working overdrive make sure the plug is connected into the trans and its a simple power and ground wire. You can make a overdrive switch easily. By default itll stay in the 4 gear mode.
At 80 rpm's are at 3k

I really appreciate the info. I really want to get this car on tbe road so i can enjoy stock Tercel life while I finish the turbo build for the Yaris.

Then I can start accumulating parts for it

No problem. I had to find out most of the info the hard way and countless hours of searching toyota parts diagrams
If you got any other questions feel free to ask.

I found the part # for the bracket. Did a little digging. 12303-11072

Ooook

So I grabbed a 4spd today luckily it came with everything...but they cut the TV cable....and I mangled mine taking it out. So i had to hodge podge them together. But it was a straight forward swap.

Im letting the RTV set up overnight and ill button everything back together tomorrow.

I will say the 4spd is a big bastard and took a little finagling to get into place.

So i works. Drove it around a little yesterday (no tags)

Alot of little things are different.

For instance the shift cable bracket is thicker. And the 4speed cable has a thicker shoulder to compensate. I know this as the trans came with a cut shifter cable from the donor car. So i had to 'thin' the bracket with a grinder...no big deal.

Also the length for the 3psd cable is longer so i needed to space up the bracket...some longer bolts and 3/8 nuts as spacers worked well.

The pivot where it goes onto the shift selector is slightly different in diameter. I damn near destroyed the plastic bushing trying to press it into the 3spd cable since its ever so slightly smaller. Which also made it tight on the selector. If I had a better set of drill bits I could have made this fit better. But I was tight on time and jammed it together.

The lower bolt hole on the starter needs to be drilled to remove the threads as the 4spd the bolt direction is flipped.

Speedo cable was a straight swap. Didnt need the extention thingy that came with the trans.

So yay! Its in and works. I just need to adjust the TV cable to get the shift timing nust right and then get tags on it eventually.

congrats on the swap!
my 4speed ran wayyyy smoother than the 3speed
i put a new motor mount in when i swapped the trans and about 8 days later the rear motor mount was crap.

All this interest in auto transmissions seems weird to me.

Back when my manual Paseo was almost stock, I raced one, quarter mile, out in the country. His was an auto though.

Either he sucked at racing quarter mile, or the auto made his waaayyyy slow. Off the starting line, I am spinning a bit, and get a second gear scratch. No throttle lift all the way. My friends standing by the starting line, said his just barely squatted, with hardly any spinning, if any. Not even close by the end of the quarter. I kinda felt bad.
