Project Parts Car


During my banning/leave of absence from TercelOnline I didn't stop loving Tercels, but I definitely needed a break from them.

After getting the 97 Tercel off Aldro that had a "rebuilt" 4efte automatic in it and killing over on the initial startup, I had all I could take of dealing with 4efte's and the persistent headaches of trying to get parts for them. People act like they're somehow easier to obtain parts for than the U.S. model engines, which any parts house can get stuff for, but whatever. Kentucky must be the magical land of where all the parts are stored.

Anyways, I obtained a bone stock 96 Tercel manual with a rough body (it's all in what you don't see in the pics) from a guy in Ohio. Sure enough on the way home it jumped time on the timing belt and you can guess the rest. Funny that he told me he just put a belt on it, but oh well.







So here I sit with 4 Tercel chassis (93, 95, 96, and 97), some dead 4efte engines, misc 4efte parts that haven't sold, and a dead 5efe dis. still in a car. Yet I still wanted to be back in a Tercel, driving it daily, racing it at the track every weekend I can, but I just felt spent out on these cars.

While going through the garage one day I happen to run across something I had long forgotten, my stock 5efe dis motor from my beloved 95 Tercel. The memories of that car from the days of me being a ricer with a body kit to when I put oem bumper covers on it and threw in a 4efte. Attending countless car meets, people asking to check the car out or if they could go for a ride, racing hundreds of races and getting them on video, racing at the drag strip, people getting so butthurt about losing to a Tercel, the countless jokes, just all the great memories I've made with that old car came back to me. No Camaro, Cobra, or anything could replace that car. But as I said, here I sit without driving/racing one since sometime in 2011 or 2012.

So I took into account of all the stuff I had laying around and realized that there's still hope to be back in a Tercel and not spending much money at all.

Sooo here we go:

Phase 1: Take the 1997 Tercel and remove the 4efte engine, auto trans, and anything else that I will not be using.

Phase 2: Remove everything from the 1996 Tercel and swap over to the 1997 to get it setup as close to an oem car as possible.

Phase 3: Use all the sensors from the blown 96 engine and put on my 95 5efe dis engine and install it into the 97 chassis.

Phase 4: Pick out from the stock pile of 4efte manifolds, headers, stock N/A manifolds, CT9 turbos, intercoolers, charge pipes, couplers, T-bolt clamps, oil lines, water lines, and put together a turbo kit. Going to run stock wastegate pressure to keep the EGT's down. No looking to set the world on fire.

Phase 5: Fuel system. I still have my 95 tank with return style fuel hat laying around here somewhere. Install that, setup a return fuel line, install my 440cc injectors (or buy larger ones if needed), and run the stock fuel pressure regulator and return style rail.

Phase 6: The most important phase of all. Buy a Megasquirt system and wire it up. I'm already familiar with MS and it's the most versatile stand alone there is. Tune the car for 93 octane and probably for E85 as well since it's available at the pump here.

And before anyone starts with their "E85 myths", save you ignorance for someone else. Not interested in what you've "heard" as opposed to what you know for "fact." Use this thread as an opportunity to learn if you don't know.

The overall goal? To be back in a turbo Tercel that I'll be driving a lot because I want to, not because I have to. To have a car that I can walk into the "magical Kentucky parts houses" and get parts for them, then and there, and not some dude in Donkey Kong land that will use my credit card info for whatever he pleases and never get my parts.

Racing? Of course I'll be back at the track racing, but I won't be pushing the CT9 hard because I'm all to familiar with its characteristics.

Street racing? Well that is one part of me that doesn't really exist anymore. I've got other things going on in life that I like and don't want taken away because I got caught street racing. Not like you all would know anyways since this forum thinks the FBI watches it for street racing threads and is going to do a big online bust.

And as for the new people reading this, I'm a sarcastic individual and not a full fledged prick, but I can be. Don't be afraid to ask questions and I'll answer them to the best of my ability as long as they are on the subject. Otherwise U2U me or redirect me to your thread of concern. I'm here to help, but not going to support those spreading false information. :thumbup:

Awesome post man, glad you're still wrenching tercels and are willing to be a resource for those that need it, myself included. Wish the east coast had an abundance of parts like Kentucky does but its all in fun and im anxious to learn as i build my first myself (im in for a mission n a half).


Please please keep the board posted with your project and progress (someones gotta keep it alive lol) i wish i would have known sooner i see plenty of members and yet its ghost town so i've got alota research and catching up to do n hopefully somethingll spark more ppl online.

The "Kentucky parts abundance" was a bit of a joke, but there's no struggle in sourcing new and used parts here.

I've been busy making money at job #2, then it's rained on my off days.

Job #2 = Outside Work. I have to work on cars outside as well.

After pouting to Ian (117) yesterday about how time/life has been against me getting to lay a hand on this project, a very short window of opportunity opened up for me to go to the garage. As in less than an hour, short!

Located an engine stand, got the original 95 5efe dis. longblock drug motor out of a dry storage (man, what a battle that was) got all the misc leftovers from other projects/4efte's, and seen what all gaskets/accessories that I just need to purchase.

So today I luckily got a lunch hour and call it friends at few part houses/dealerships to locate me everything. I also had to find parts for other non-Toyota vehicles as well.

That's all I've got for now. Got some rainy days coming up in the forecast, so I'll be free of the evenings after getting home from job #1.

Done some more cleaning last night. Engine gasket kit & new slave cylinder is ordered.

Noticed the rods got some ever so slight side to side play. I've got some brand new standard size bearings laying around. Probably pull the rod caps and see what's going on.
