rack & pinion gear ratio

i just ran into the specification on tercel reference for the steering gear ratio on 1 gen paseo and 5 gen tercel . the steering ratio on the paseo is 15.3:1 and the tercel is 21.8:1 or 17.5:1. i assume that the 21.8 was the manual rack and the 17.5 is with p/s . so my question is there anyone have installed a paseo rack and pinion for a quicker steering ratio? if yes was there any noticeble difference ? :dunno:

Actually I did the opposite. Put a Tercel manual rack in a Paseo. I never drove it with the power steering. I made the swap to eliminate headaches. The a/c isn't hooked up as the car has been wrecked and damaged the a/c. Due to this I only run 1 belt for water pump and alternator.

I do not need a second belt to turn a pump
I do not have a pump robbing power
I will never have to replace a leaking hose
No pump to leak or lock up
No pressure on rack to ensure leaks

I have to pull about 15lbs to turn at a stop
I have to pull about a 1/4 of a lb to turn at 15mph
At 60mph turning is almost effortless

Nothing but pros in my opinion.

I run a manual rack in my Tercel w/ a 4e, which can be alot of effort when parking. I originally had power steering, but overheated it often when running autox.

My LeMon's 96 Paseo runs a power rack, but no pump, just the way MalibuGuy runs his, and haven't had any issues.
