If your going to autox it...leave it alone. You will need all the bump travel you can get. These cars bottom out easy

so this past weekend i started wrenching on my car, my plan was to rebuild the engine. But that plan may have changed, today i traded a bicycle for a 2000 toyota echo. it was a fair trade since the car was going to be junked the a/c doesnt work and the clutch is so gone the car doesnt move under its own power. the motor is perfect!!

people have talked about swapping in a 1nzfe into a tercel but i dont think anyone has done it, right?

the transmission mounts looks like they will work with zero modification, and the passenger motor mount looks like an easy mod to move over from the echo to the tercel

wiring may be a headache, first thing i notice the echo has no speedo cable its electronic and the ecu has a input for vehicle speed, so the tercel speedo wont work.

so anybody have any more info on this swap? any major things i didnt see? its more work than i was planning but if its worth it ill do the swap

ill post some photos tomorrow

Theres a device called " cable x" that converts an electronic signal to a motor driven output for a cable speedo. Just google it, we use them in our rx7/rx8 ls swaps.

thats awesome thanks for the info, im pretty sure that will work.
im going to see if the echo speedo guts fit inside the tercel cluster (looks like the same bolt pattern).
the echo's cluster has a small ECM in it that the ecu looks for a signal from, if it isn't connected the car throws a CEL

ok so i decided not to do the swap, the a/c system is to different, its possible but to much work for me right now. my tercel is the first car i have owned with a working a/c and its awesome here in south florida!
so my plan is back to rebuild the tercel motor but now i will have the echo to drive around in while i work on the tercel. im installing the new clutch for the echo this weekend.
the echo will be for sale after i finish with the tercel. if anybody wants to give this swap a go.

So this weekend was the Grassroots motorsports $2014 challenge.
I decide to enter my echo (the tercel is in pieces). for those that dont know the challenge is to build a car with a total budget price of the current year($2014) there are 3 parts to the competition; autocross, drag race, and the park expo.
the echo is stock! the only thing i did was take my rims from the tercel put a set of used Hoosiers SM6 on them.

budget:
Car: $75 cash + Bicycle
Clutch: $69
Tires/mounting: $135
Tach: $10
total: $289

As you can see in the last pic, My brother and I won in our class!!
the weekend was awesome, everyone was freindy and fun to hang with.
review of the echo:
what a surprise that echo was! the "control" car this year was a brand new fiat 500 abarth and the echo got a 2 second better autocross time!
in the autocross the echo feels like a boat rocking back and forth and side to side (base model does not have sway bars)and all four corners rubbed nasty, the car is to tall also ( will not pass scca rules with R compound tires) but even with all that the car went where you pointed. with a few tips from a pro driver i got better time than some other cars like the civic in the first pic, a bmw 318ti, and a few others.
the 1nzfe motor is nice, torque is available throughout the rpm range.
the gearing sucks on the echo
my best 1/4 mile time was 17.41, i could not get the tires to hook up.
i spun the tires on every gear it was to cold of a night for the hoosiers.
the best performance feature of the echo is the fact its sub 2000lbs
thats with spare tire half a tank of gas and the interior is intact.
there was some luck in me winning the team that was ahead of us blew there motor and the only drag run they made was on one less cylinder and got a 21.54 ET.
