"TOGA" (not TODA) High Volume oil pumps... beware?

The following was originally posted by Throttler

So I bought a Toga high volume oil pump for my 5efhe build,
and during the install I wanted to see what makes it "high
volume". I took measurements of the gyrotor diameter and
thickness and compared them to the stock 5efhe oil pump.

Toga gyrotor thickness = 10mm

Stock 5efhe gyrotor thickness = 10mm

Toga gyrotor diameter = 53mm

Stock 5efhe gyrotor diameter = 53mm

Gyrotor profile comparison = same

I then thought "maybe the pump geometry is the same, and
they just spin the pump faster" by using a different gear
w/ less teeth. This pump is a positive displacement pump, so
the volume it pumps is directly proportional to the speed it
spins. I counted the teeth on both pumps and they were the
same, 23 teeth. So that does not contribute to the high
volume.

So by this time i'm pretty pissed that I really don't have a high
volume pump, but then I had the thought to look at the
markings on the housing, and what I found was astonishing.

On the "Toga" oil pump there was some grinding around the
crank seal area.

Then I went to look at the stock 5efhe Aisin oil pump, and saw
that "Toyota" was cast there!

Those fu ckers at Toga just ground ground off the "Toyota"
and passed an otherwise stock oil pump off as a high
volume one!!!

I guess the only thing High Volume about this pump is the high
volume of cash it costs, and the high volume of bull sh it this
company is about.

For the record, I bought this pump from HPF.COM

to the tune of $145 + shipping.

Here is ANOTHER SOURCE that is a little more:

Paseo
w/o '95 Calif. Emissions 5EFE 92-95 16V DOHC 4 cyl. OPTO32-HV $155

Tercel/Paseo
('95 Paseo w/Calif. Emissions) 5EFE 95-98 16V DOHC 4 cyl. OPTO32C-HV $155

Now is it possible that this place I bought the pump from is a
scam (HPfreaks)? Imagine buying stock Aisin oil pumps,
grinding the "Toyota" logo off, stamping "HV" on the pump,
printing a bunch of Toga boxes, and basically doubling or
tripling your money...

Rockauto has oil pumps from $47.79 (3ee pump by Aisin) to
$102.79 depending on if you need a 1st gen 5efe, 2nd gen
5efe, 3ee and what brand (Aisin, Beck/Arnley, Rock Products).

Sealed Power pumps are more expensive than the "Toga"
pumps.

I was stunned when I saw your High Volume oil pumps mentioned
in THIS THREAD

Care to offer any explanation?

alf :irked:

Still no reply to the above email so I called there and spoke
with Kirk whose explanation was that the ports have been
bored out... (whatever that means?)

there are no ports on the pump, the only port is for the pump bearing it self which returns to the oil pan. if that is bored out than WTF you loose volume... uless the relief under the rotor is the soposed port, still right now i cant figure out how that would augment the output ?

atleast it's still a legit toyota oil pump.

Only way you can get more volume is from the gear being changed, or hog out the oil passage, which i was thinking of doing.

Isn't TODA the brand name of the high performance oil pump and
NOT Toga? Toga must be an Asian rip-off of TODA?

You got it Alf.. TODA makes legit performance stuff. I was going to mention the irony of a cheap chinese name rip-off not being good for product quality.
