Very nice work Alf. You have it correct.

If you're quite serious about engine longevity, send your oil out to Blackstone Labs for analysis. They'll do exact counts on metal and other particulates in the oil. It'll show you if anything is wearing abnormally, if you're getting coolant in the oil, etc. As far as cost, if you do the TBN test (additional $10), you can see how much life is left in the oil and extend your oil change intervals to compensate for the added cost. IMO its worth it just for peace of mind that you KNOW nothing is wrong with the engine.

While a considerably larger filter, it fits our engines. I've

using it in TERCEL1's 4EFTE

PS: The newer style features a rough canister (sort of like
the Fram filter) making oily hand removal a bit easier.

Hey Alf, thanks for the suggestion of running the PL22821. I read this thread and yesterday while at the store put both the stock filter for the tercel and the PL22821 next to each other and WOW they don't look that different from your picture but in real life that thing looks to be 4x the volume. So I said what the hell (i'm sure the 3EE doesn't need it) and threw it on, cleared everything no problem. You're the man :2thumbsup:

Just thought I'd add my 2Cents to a semi=dormant thread.

I sold auto parts and ran a machine shop for 25 years. Changing oil and using a good quality filter are a must.
Pur!, NAPA/WIX, MOST oem brands are fine and dandy when it comes to filters.

As for Fram filters, If you ever saw the inside of one you would never, ever consider using one. They used to like to say their filter beats all other brands in single-pass efficiency tests. Which was true. But no other brand, nor industry standard used a single pass test. STAY AWAY from FRAM.

ByPass valves, all filters should have them.
Anti drainback valvles= only needed on filters that mount horizontally or in a downward sloping manner. Gotta keep the oil in so you don't have a temp loss of oil flow upon start up. Material of the valve is not that big of a deal if you change your oil religiously and regularly.

Just remember, nothing beats good preventative maintanence. If you take care of your car, it will not let you down.

You may disagree with me all you want. You'll still be wrong.

one thing I noticed when I had the larger 2zzge filter on my 5efe, is it took longer for the oil light to go out upon initial startup...meaning it took longer to pressurize the system w/ the larger volume oil filter...

Sorry to bump an old thread but it's relevant. Had a 2006 Chevy SUV in shop this week with oil troubles. After running for 20 minutes the oil warnings go off at idle. Took an amsoil filter off and replaced with Purolator and no more warnings. Tore filter open and no debris. Just too restrictive.

Unfortunately, the PL22821 filter (either styles) was discontinued a
couple years ago!

Greg the 77 is same as 76 but slightly longer. It's the filter MR2 turbo calls for.

I don't have anything substantive to add except that this thread has been extremely helpful. Great community!
