Oh, yah! Duh!:dunce:I forgot. I contacted him about his headlight setup.

That is got to be one of the best looking 4th gens on the board. IMO of course.

:2thumbsup:

Alright, I just picked up a manual steering rack with the knucks and cowl that mounts to the firewall. After rereading Trev's post about the column differences, I guess I need to get back out to the JY and pull the column as well.:bah:

So, let me recap... to go manual we got 2 options:

1- remove all the P/S pump and hoses, drain the power R&P and cap off the holes.

2- remove all the P/S pump and hoses, replace the R&P, replace the steering column and replace the little plastic cowl that goes on the firewall.

I'm wondering if doing #1 will be problematic in the long run... i mean the power R&P was made to hold fluid in it. :dunno:

I did the mod, completely on my 4th gen. It wasn't easy, about 3 hours on a lift. Taking the manual rack out was the hardest part. Before doing all the work to the "donor R&P" I suggest highly, you replace the inner and outer tie rods, and the boots on the unit. Most of the rubber ones are rotted out due to time, the one's I replaced mine with are plastic, so no problems there anymore.

Overall, after swapping to all new hardware on the actual unit, my car got alot harder to steer, but also, never felt better. You also lose the feeling of the looseness of the P/S. You can control the car better, especially in turns. This was one of the best mod's I've ever done to my car. Just make sure that you get the steering coloum out of the donor car. It makes life alot harder when not having it. I'm also not to keen on welding on a part that has that much force and is a vital part of the car not wrecking.

Good luck,

If you have any questions, just ask. I'll try to be of assistance.

One more thing, If you have A/C and intend to keep it, YOU NEED THE PULLEY. If you don't have the pulley, you can't have A/C. It bolts right to the block, you go to advance auto, kragen, autozone...etc. and look up the belt for that setup, a/c and no p/s. The tensioner is on that pulley.

are the mounting points the same for manual and power racks?

if so, the tercel shares the same power rack, being the swap over to manual would be the same for the paseo. (with the swap of the lower column shaft and cover).

JP

Edit:

found the part numbers the same for tercel and paseo on power racks. which means the same goes for swapping a manual rack into 1st gen paseo. part number (last 6) 190434.
