General Guidelines and Provisions < Applies to ALL Forums >

Guideline: a line by which one is guided: as a) a cord or rope to aid a passer over a difficult point or to permit retracing a course b) an indication or outline of policy or conduct.

The Golden Rules

The board @ TercelOnline.com (TO) isn't run by rules, per se. Rather, it is moderated by a tight-knit group of moderators who have volunteered to put themselves in the position of making difficult judgment calls. Most of these Guidelines are geared towards just improving the state of the forum through smart tips (using good subject lines is just wise, ya know). Some of these Guidelines are more prohibitive, however, and they function as rules. The rules come in two-forms: the cardinal, and the compulsory.

Cardinal Rules

  1. The Member Sign-Up Agreement must be respected in full. If you need to refresh your memory, you can see the agreement here.
  2. No trolling. Don't make posts that are inflammatory just to get people riled up. Substance is a key to not being labeled a troll, but substance alone cannot prevent you from being considered a troll. Substance with a dash of personal attacks will get you labeled as a troll.
  3. Ad hominem and personal attacks are not permitted. Criticize the ideas, not the people. An ad hominem attack is a logical fallacy describing the attempt to discredit an argument by merely attacking the credibility of the arguer. Excessive flaming will not be tolerated. Users who verbally assault the character or person of other posters on a regular basis will be banned. Moderator's judgment applies here. "You are wrong" is not a personal attack; "You wrong because you are an idiot" probably. Persistent name-calling in the absence of content will likely be assessed as a violation of this rule.
  4. No pornographic, sexually offensive, sexually explicit, or objectifying material. Simple rule. Moderator's judgment applies here. We'd like for our readers to be able to read the board @ TO at work and share with friends without fear of retribution.
  5. Respect the privacy of others. Do not post other's private phone numbers, addresses, pictures, U2U conversations, etc., without their express permission.
  6. Abuse of editing privileges is not permitted. Editing posts for grammar or information is fantastic, but after an initial grace period of 10 minutes, users may not delete/edit content for the purpose of evading possible moderation (removing flames, trolls, etc.). Also, starting a thread, not liking how it turns out, and then deleting your own posts is irresponsible and unfair, and an actionable offense. It's simply not cool to troll users and then delete it, acting as if nothing has happened.
  7. Each forum member must maintain e-mail. All users must provide a current, frequently read e-mail address in his/her internal profile.
  8. Do not place foul language in thread subjects.
  9. And of course, NO SPAMMING. No commercial-oriented posts, and no flooding with useless content or content designed to engage readers into forum wars or trolling other sites.

Compulsory Rules

  1. Use descriptive subject lines and research your post. This reduces the chances of double-posting, and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Also, scan the subjects of the last several days' posts to make sure you aren't duplicating posts.
  2. Post in the right forum! If it's about gauges, post it in "Interior Modifications" forum. Even if it's only humor, an observation, or angst, if it's about something that we have a forum for, post it there.
  3. Restrict the use of excessive foul language. Although we don't really care if people cuss (um, we have been known to cuss ourselves now and again, we have censors too), excessive foul language is likely to get moderated, if only because excessive foul language usually indicates that someone is utterly clueless. Buy a thesaurus. We also require that you leave rough or offensive language out of the thread subjects. A lot of people read the OpenForum at work, and while foul language is par for the course, let's try and keep it kid friendly.

Finally, remember that we're not the ratings board here. Not making any hard and fast rules means that the moderators can use their good judgment in moderation, and we think the results speak for themselves. Bottom line: we almost always give warnings. But we don't give them twice to the same person or hesititate to ban someone.

We at this board also reserve the right to reveal your identity (or any information we have about you) in the event of a complaint or legal action arising from any information posted by you.

Keep in mind it is impossible for the staff at TO to confirm the validity of posts on this board. Please remember that we do not actively monitor the posted messages and are not responsible for their content. We do not warrant the accuracy, completeness or usefulness of any information presented. The messages express the views of the author, not necessarily the views of this board. Anyone who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to notify an administrator of this thread immediately. We have the rights to remove objectionable content, within a reasonable time frame, if we determine that removal is necessary. This is a manual process, however, so please realize that we may not be able to remove or edit particular messages immediately. This policy goes for member profile information as well.

You have the ability, as you register, to choose your username. We advise that you keep the name appropriate. With this user account you are about to register, you agree to never give your password out to another member, for your protection and for validity reasons. BOARD GUIDELINES: abbreviated version, click here for full version.
· Be courteous & respectful to fellow members. Do not insult or use obscene language.
· Posts in a particular forum need to stay on topic. If you want to talk about something that is drastically removed from the topic of the thread, please take it to General Discussion. General Discussion was set up and designed for members to discuss issues not related to a specific forum section. We welcome most general conversation in the General Discussion, but discourage it from other forums. Use a title that describes the content of your post. Don't use all caps or special characters to draw attention.
· No flaming. Do not post messages with no relevant value other than to incite a controversial reaction.
· Only post what you are allowed to. If you don't own the copyright, make sure you have permission granted from whoever does.
· No spamming. Do not clutter the boards with useless or off-topic posts.
· No ographic, sexually offensive, sexually explicit, or objectifying material.
· No advertising. Do not use this site as a redirector or gateway to another site for the purpose of collecting click income or advertising. Although there are times when a link to another site is necessary for helping or answering a question, TO reserves the right to determine what is and is not advertising. This is not your personal "for sale" board to advertise items unless you are certifiably sponsored by TO.
· Do not impersonate other individuals or falsely represent yourself. Do not impersonate TO administrators or board staff.
· Do not post personal information (i.e. addresses, phone numbers, passwords, or any other private information) ever.
· Do not create a thread as a means to chat about private matters. The TO board has a “User to User” system, or “U2U”. It is a simple messaging client that you can use to send private messages to fellow members on this board. Please utilize the “U2U” system for such matters. Storage of “U2U” messages are limited.
· TO reserves the right to modify/delete/ban any member, posting, profile, and/or signature for any reason, without prior notification or explanation.

STREET RACING POSTS ARE PROHIBITED:
Street racing with motor vehicles, and participating as a spectator of street racing events is illegal. TercelOnline.com (TO) does not encourage or condone illegal street racing or any kind of racing that is not properly authorized and supervised. Street racing is inherently dangerous. Any person involved in operating motor vehicles in street racing events should be a properly skilled and trained driver of street racing motor vehicles, should wear proper protective gear and clothing and use motor vehicles that are properly equipped with safety features appropriate for the dangers inherently involved in street racing. However, participants in street racing events have been seriously injured and even killed, even though wearing safety gear and clothing and using motor vehicles equipped with safety features. The only sure way to be protected against the dangers inherent in street racing is not to participate in street racing, directly or indirectly, either as a driver or other participant, or as a spectator.

Allowing street racing discussions and videos legitimizes an illegal activity that is dangerous. Any such post will be removed immediately and the member given either a warning or infraction.

WARNING:
To save on bandwidth and storage space, accounts that have been inactive for two months since it’s sign up date will be deleted and you will have to sign up again. Please log in at least once every two months.
