CarPuter/XBox?

I am thinking of building mEself a carputer or just slappin my xbox in my car, i need to know what you guys think i should buy and i got bout 99 questions to do all this.

For one, can i have two batteries hooked up (one running to my system when my car is off, and the other just for the car turing on, lol) I think you know what i mean, and so when the car starts, the system is running off of the battery that is just for the system, while it is being recharged at the same time, so both batterys will be charging at the same time.

Will this be too much for my car?
Any ideas?

i think to charge 2 batteries at the same time, you'll need to upgrade your alternator. other than that, it's possible.

if you cut the backing a little i am pretty sure you can fit any atx motherboard in there...just as long as its not an old 386 mobo where the length of it is like 3 ft x 4 ft-crazy-

yes, i know my computers, i just don't know my cars all that well, I need to know about power supplies and all that. I'm thinking of just doing my xbox, because i got a 200gb HD in there any way, and it boots faster then a computer.

I am thinking of buying a 7"TFT display off of ebay for like $130 or something, nothing fancy just cheap. I need to know how to run constant power to this as well, i don't really wanna hook it up the the cig lighter.

use a DC-DC power supply for the XBOX instead of the one that is stock int he XBOX. That way you don't have to run an inverter.

going from DC (Car battery) to AC (Inverter) to AC (Carputer/XBOX power supply) to DC (motherboard) is just silly. Skip a few steps and go straight DC to DC. An XBOX is just a small PC and uses the same molex and ATX dongle as a regualr PC. At least they look the same. Try booting the XBOX off a spare ATX PSU to test.

ATX motherboards come in many footprints withing the ATX formfactor. full ATX, mid-ATX, micro-ATX.

And then there's always the Via Epia series of mobos that are mini-ITX.

In a 95+ Tercel you have 7 3/4" X 13" of flat surface for the mobo to mount to. So a 9 1/2" X 8 1/2" Micro ATX wouldn't fit unless you do some major cutting to the back of the glovebox. Now keep in mind car manufacturers, especially Toyota try to give you as large a glovebox as space behind the box will allow so you probably don't have much more space beyond what the box provides. So if you use spacers under the mobo to clear the latch you have a little more room. So mini-ITX is a definate YES but micro_ATX is a maybe. Mini-ITX are slow and kind of limited in features whereas the micro-ATX is almost limitless in raw power and upgradeability.

macro-atx wouldnt be worth buying for this particular project really...unless you really wanna challenge people in halo while your doin 60 in a 55 or sitting in your driveway wasting gas lol.....the mini-itx board is more than enough to get the job done considering the dvd quality it had when it was running in my sierra mist box project....but if you wanted to put the computer you have in your car...id consider putting the thing in your trunk and just run longer cables

(no project has to be the exact same ;))

I had the VIA Epia 8000 mobo and it absolutely choked on DivX, lagged on some DVDs and just complety sucked at almost anything I threw at it including emulation software. And that was with 512MB ram, Win2K and an 80GB 8mb cache Hard drive. I returned it because I was so disapointed. These are all things I'd want my carputer to handle on a daily basis. I can't imagine how it would handle 3D maps and stuff on realtime GPS mapping/tracking software. That's why I'd like something ATX with an Athlon 1800 minimum. The VIA cyrix CPU is fanless for a reason. It's slow. Great for these types of projects though because of their size. Some newer model Epia boards are a little bit faster but also like $350 USD.

It all depends on what you want to do with your carputer. Just want to play MP3s and watch DVDs. Then they are fine. Actually very well suited for that. ANy more and you may want to look elsewhere.

Personally, I wouldn't really wanna mess with the xbox power supply, it is pretty different then computers, and i would probally just blow out my xbox.

really guys, just put it in the trunk. the benfits of a carputer are pretty big. combine a small box like a shuttle, with a usb hub and you can plug in gps receivers, controller, and add a wireless hub and you can download mp3s while ur car is in the garage..or driveway..pretty neat. you could probably get a cheap screen and a small pda like keyboard, or smaller, but im not sure how it would work, and you can stream your tunes from the trunk to your amp with a usb sound card that has rca jacks..:) and for simplification, wouldnt a dc/ac invertor work? hmmmbut i dont know about power on the car's end of the system...hmm im going to make something like this...

i want to run this by u guys. could u effectively build a carputer to replace ur stero..cause mine got stolen...picture this: carputer runs external sound card with rca outputs, which connects to amp..which connects to speakers...now wouldn't this work, because the rca plugs of the sound card replace the preouts of the stereo..and for control..hmm...touch screen or for cheaper..small screen with small pda keyboard as mentioned before. (a mac system would be preferable..) can you get itunes for windows? cause i have an old box laying around...neways. just wantecd to run this by u guys.. so if it seem spossible, ill write up a parts list and c what it would cost me.

yes, they have itunes for PC, I actually have an older Mac sitting around, this thing is Dabomb, But i don't use macs, can't, i am retarted with them. This mac has s-video in and out, and rca outs and all that, it costed like $2,000 when it first cam out. And i got it for free from someguy throwing it out. It is only worth $50 now, but would be cool to put in a car. Or if someone would like to buy it.
